“I CAN’T WAIT FOR SCHOOL TO START! I JUST CAN’T WAIT!” Yes, I really said that, even though I never said that while I was actually a student. As a matter of fact, the only day of school that I when I was young was the first day. That is because it was the only day that I didn’t have homework due. But now, I do look forward to starting school this September. I realize I won’t be starting the very first day; I will probably have to wait a few weeks. Most teachers don’t like to take off the first couple of weeks, after all, they just had the last 3 months off.
The reason for this exuberant attitude is very simple: (1) I get to work with little kids! It’s like you’re entering their world. Everything they do or say is because it makes sense to them. Like the day I caught the third grader chewing on his number two pencil. I asked him, “Why would you do that?” He looked at me with those big brown eyes and said, “My other pencil tastes funny!” (2) I get to interact with some big kids (teachers and staff). After substituting in these schools for the past 8 years, I have come to know many of the teachers, administrators, and the staff. Quite a few of them I consider friends, especially during COVID, when we spent lots of time together. (3) I get to make some money so I can support my addiction (more on that later). These are all great reasons why I want to get back into the classroom (except maybe that last reason is questionable), because that is where the people are, that’s where the children are, and that’s where the moms and dads interact with the teaches and staff. That’s where I want to be!
Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let you light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.” I want to be where my lamp will be able to light the entire room. I want to be where people will be able to see the work that God does, and to be able to see His power behind that work. For example, when Johnny shoves Bobby because Bobby is bigger and Johnny is a foot shorter and can’t reach the water fountain, I want to be there to tell Johnny it’s okay, he doesn’t have to shove. And I want to teach both of them about forgiveness and what it means to be kind to one another. And I want to be there to tell that teacher whose daughter was just in an accident and was on her way to the hospital, that I will be praying for her and her daughter. I want to be there, to help the secretary who needed help because another teacher couldn’t come in that day. I want to let my light shine before men so that He may be praised. Remember, when you are showing the love of Christ, when you are living the love of Christ, you are honoring the name of Christ for all the world to see. God will use that example to draw men and women and boys and girls unto himself.
I love the kids (alright, there are some days when I say, “I’m not going back”, but they are the exception). I love the other people that I work with, they’re (usually) pretty helpful and kind. And that is why I say, I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL! As far as that third reason, let me explain. I’m addicted to coin collecting. I love it, but I can’t afford to purchase coins when I’m not bringing in money. So, for all those reasons, I say, “I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL!
