As the youngest sibling of three, it gets wearisome being ordered around all the time. When a child, I expected it, but as an adult, I’m over it! Please do not misunderstand me, I love my siblings dearly. They are so good to me. Yet, they tend to forget I am an adult, just as they are.
The three of us, Lazarus, Martha, and myself share a great love for Jesus. He and Lazarus are close friends, and Jesus treats us like family! What an honor to be held in such esteem by Jesus. When He comes to town, His visits quickly turn into celebrations as neighbors and friends clamor to hear Him speak at our home.
THE VISIT
On one such stopover, He arrived with several disciples. Eagerly, the disciples shared stories of their travels and experiences of healing and making converts in Jesus’ name. After their animated accounts, Jesus began to speak. I was captivated by his teaching. His words wrapped around me like a hug; I didn’t want to move and gave no thought to my sister.
WHILE IN THE KITCHEN….
I ignored the noises from the kitchen. Martha was toiling away, banging pots and pans while preparing the food. She made a habit of turning such events into chores; too overwhelmed with work to experience any joy on the visit. Martha wanted to show off her cooking; after all, her most famous dinner guest was Jesus. She asked me for assistance, but I put her off. I ignored her even though the number of guests was greater than normal.
A BETTER CHOICE
All was well until Martha abruptly asked Jesus, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me” (Luke 10:40).
My heart sunk and expected a reprimand. But instead, Jesus gently responded, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42).
Both Martha and I stood with mouths agape at His response. He then lovingly smiled at us. Martha and I hugged; I apologized to her for being neglectful. She sat down beside me, and we listened to His message before both getting up to finish serving.
SEEKING THE BEST
How often I reflect on His words, “Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” I chose the good part; can you believe it! The little sister chose right! Since that day, I try to be more cognizant of helping others, but I’ll never be too busy to seek Him first! Jesus asked what fills our minds: “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matt. 6:31-33).
What about you? Are you like Martha or Mary? Maybe a little of both, depending on the day. You probably heard this question before; especially if you are female. But it applies to men as well. Anyone can become too busy with doing good deeds. We can be so self- absorbed that we miss the point of what is important. Ask Him for discernment when you choose activities, even ministry, if it takes away from spending quality time with Him. Prioritize sitting at His feet first. That brings genuine joy. This is Christ’s dinner perspective on how to truly love Him best.
