THE SUNRISE

Look up and see what you are missing

I love autumn, from the changing leaves that crunch under foot, tasty apple desserts and warm soups, to the colorful mums and wide variety of pumpkins that adorn every roadside stand.   I especially love the vibrant sunrises and sunsets this time of year.  Taking in the splendor of this season always reminds me an occasion many years ago where God’s beauty was magnificently on display, and I almost missed it!

FRAZZLED AND RUNNING LATE

It was the normal weekday morning rush, getting ready for work and my two sons ready for school.  Organization is not my strong suit so fighting the clock is never unusual.  However, on that morning, I further lost the battle as I rushed around to feed the dogs, check book bags, lunch money, and ensure everyone’s teeth were brushed.  By the time I entered my car, I was frazzled and running late.

THE FARMER SITTING IN EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT

While hastily driving to drop the boys off at the sitters, I noticed a farmer sitting on his tractor at the edge of his field gazing eastward.  He briefly caught my eye, but I didn’t think much of it until I made my return trip.  As I wound my way along the country road, I noticed him in the exact same spot as where he previously was. I was curious.

THE MAGNIFICENT SUNRISE

I slowed down. Following his gaze, I was stunned. To my left was the most magnificent sunrise. The view was an amazing array of colors. There were shades of golden yellow, varying hues of pinks and purples, all topped off with beautiful rays of sunlight against the sky-blue background.  It was one of the most beautiful sunrises I ever witnessed.

THE NEED TO SLOW DOWN

What a shame it would have been to have missed that spectacular light show all because I was in too much of a hurry! The farmer taught me a valuable lesson that morning. Learning to slow down and enjoy God’s creation is a valuable class composed of a two-step lesson.  First, we need to slow down! (This may become easier with age.)  Second, is enjoying what God created.  He loves us so much; he surrounds us with his beauty which is very evident this time of year.

“Be still and know (recognize, understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalms 46:10) The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And the expanse [of heaven] is declaring the work of His hands.” (Psalms 19:1)

TAKE NOTICE AND OBSERVE

Ask God today to help you to intentionally slow down, take notice, and observe what He has created. Praise Him for it. Who knows how many of His beautiful acts of creativity we have overlooked because our eyes are focused downward, rather than up. Let God get your head out of the finite. Observe the Infinite and thank Him for it.
