A New Command

In John 13:34-38, Jesus introduces what he calls a new commandment: to love one another. This command differs significantly from the Old Testament instruction to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus makes this commandment both more exclusive and more demanding. Rather than loving all neighbors, he focuses specifically on loving fellow believers. More challenging still, he elevates the standard from loving others as we love ourselves to loving as he has loved us - with perfect, sacrificial servant love. The necessity of commanding love reveals something profound about human nature and Christian community. While it's relatively easy to love God, who is consistent and faithful, loving Christians proves more difficult because they're imperfect people who know better but don't always do better. We can excuse non-believers' behavior because they don't know God's standards, but when fellow Christians act hypocritically or break the rules they know, it creates natural frustration and disappointment. Jesus had just demonstrated this love by washing his disciples' feet, including Judas who would soon betray him. This servant love means choosing compassion over condemnation, showing kindness even when we could justifiably be harsh, and loving those who don't deserve it. Jesus emphasizes that this love for one another will be the primary way the world recognizes his disciples - not through theological knowledge or biblical expertise, but through genuine care and compassion. When we love difficult, rule-breaking Christians, we mirror Christ's love for us and put the gospel on display for the world to see.
