THE SCARS WE LIVE WITH

“That’s gonna leave a mark!” It’s something we have all said at some point, whether in jest or truth. As I think back over the past year, there are many happy memories, but I also have numerous dings; marks caused by living on this side of eternity. No one passes through life on this side of Heaven without marks, not even Jesus.

THE UNIVERSAL HUMAN EXPERIENCE

Pain is a universal human experience. I find it interesting that when Jesus first appeared to the disciples, He invited them to see his scars and touch His resurrected body. (Luke 24:39) Jesus conquered sin and was raised from the dead, yet his body still bore the scars.

UNDERSTANDING SCARS

I understand scars. The holidays often intensify the pain of my son’s death. The grief of missing him and all the things that will never be reverberate as loudly as his presence did. Several well-meaning friends recently encouraged me to “reflect on the good and happy things that have and will happen” and believe that “even still, God is sovereign and has good plans to bring from the sorrows of life.” My heart DOES rejoice in the echoes of laughter and warmth of memories made throughout the year. I DO believe somehow, someway, despite the devastation and scars of Anthony’s death, good will come.

MY SCARS ARE STILL TENDER

But I’m not who I was before. My scars are still tender, tightening and contracting when touched. I think I will live with this pain until I get to Heaven, where all things will be made new.

WHERE BROKENESS HAS DRIVEN ME

I am thankful for the brokenness that has driven me to the feet of Jesus. I am thankful for His feet that walked in flesh on our Earth and still bear the evidence. He understands the pain of being human. I am grateful for the truth of Emmanuel, “God with us”. God with ME. Never once have I ever walked alone. (Psalm 23:4) He has been WITH me and comforted me. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5)

THE INVITATION

On the dawn of 2025, I invite you to give your scars to Jesus. He understands each one and is with YOU. Exchange the pain of humanity with the victory of Jesus’ resurrection. Let His scars leave their healing mark on your heart. One day, you will not just be celebrating a new eternity, but ALL things will be made new. (Revelation 21:5) Remember, Jesus conquered sin and was raised from the dead. His body still bore the scars, but they were replaced by pure joy.
