Do you know a “Captain Obvious”? You know the type: that person who seems compelled to share all things which should be apparent to everyone else. On occasion, I have been accused of such behavior. It took me back when a work buddy first gave me that title. To my surprise, he continued to say, “Jenny, it is like you are saying, ‘Look guys, the grass is green!’” There was no offense on my part, just laughter, and after thinking about it, I realized he was right. I am Captain Obvious regarding God’s truth and Who Jesus is.
WHEN CAPTAIN OBVIOUS IS GOOD
Our faith walk should be like that. The foundations of who we are in Christ Jesus are unshakeable truths just as evident as when someone says, “The grass is green.” It is not bad to be Captain Obvious regarding Jesus. His truth refreshes and keeps us connected to our Heavenly Father. Reflecting on His endless love and mercy is a wonderful habit that breathes life into our spirits. Pondering the cross and resurrection of Jesus imparts lasting wonder. The repetition of hearing the Gospel preached, singing songs of praise and worship, or being fed by reading His Word, is never tiring. It is our daily bread that nourishes us spiritually. This is obvious for a healthy walk of faith.
OBVIOUS WORDS FOR TRYING TIMES
When life becomes routine, burdensome, or downright challenging, we know we can turn to God’s Word and cling to his promises. “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). The Apostle Paul’s advice is as relevant today as it was when he wrote, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation…I can do all things through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12-13). The Book of Proverbs always gives practical wisdom. Try basking in Jesus’ love and reliving His miracles in the New Testament. The Gospel can save the lives of those who do not yet know Christ as their Savior. It is just as precious for those who have known him for days or decades.
Katherine Hankey, the author of the song “I Love to Tell the Story”, explained it best in her lyrics: “I love to tell the story for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” Are you hungering and thirsting to hear God’s Word? Do you know it obviously is God’s truth regarding how to live both now and eternally?
We can proudly be Captain Obvious regarding the eternal, unshakeable truths of Jesus Christ. Make it a daily habit to turn to God’s Word and cling to His promises. That is obviously why God gave them to us.
